Well… as of last night, France went into a second lockdown. I can’t say I was surprised.

In France, it’s the famous “Fall back” weekend, meaning that tomorrow morning we’ll all be well rested after an extra hour of sleep (in theory… unless we do the old “I’ve got an extra hour to sleep tonight, what else can I do?” trick… you know that one?)
As I’m writing this, it’s still early and the kids aren’t up & about yet. Liz typically takes advantage of the early mornings to air-out the house – throwing windows open wide (especially recommended in an age of Covid – but the French are big proponents of it in normal times). She had pity on me though… at only 12˚C (54˚F) my teeth were nigh unto chattering, so she made me a hot chocolate and closed the window. 😉
Let’s look back on the week…

Well, we wondered if Covid hadn’t finally come knocking at our door. Last Friday, Dominic came home from school and wasn’t feeling well. It lasted all weekend. He didn’t come to church on Sunday and we couldn’t do much on Monday as I was gone to Angers with the car all day.
With school back in full swing, the kids in public transportation, and the virus running rampant in France (we hit 30,000 new cases in 24 hours yesterday), you tend to think that to some extent, it’s only a matter of time.
We’ve constantly adhered to the notion that we will do all we can to respect the sanitary guidelines and social distancing, and we’ll trust the Lord for what we can’t control.
Dominic got tested on Tuesday and within a couple of hours, the test came back negative. *Phew* … and thank you Lord.
That was the beginning of our week…

Today I’m Marie Kondo-ing my blog… so to speak: I’m posting something that sparked joy in my week.
…and it was all because of a Bible Study.

Not ten days ago, we were still dealing with temperatures in the low to mid 30s (celcius), as an honest to goodness wave of Indian Summer had hit us straight between the eyes.
The past couple of days, on the other hand…. 18˚C (64˚F), blustery wind & periods of rain. It’s hard to complain about the rain because things have been parched dry, but then, a gradual shift would’ve been a bit easier to digest.
I missed last week, so I’ll work my way back a bit as well.

Members of #AYCFrance2019 will recognize todays feature pic. It’s the twin spires of the church in Richelieu, the idealized community (in terms of civil engineering – layout & architecture) that is located just about 25 km from Châtellerault.
Even those of you who are not part of that small group of people would have an awareness of the illustrious person who gave their name to the community: Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu, aka. “Cardinal Richelieu” … the dark villain of the Three Musketeers story.
Richelieu really existed and was a scourge during the reign of Louis XIV… countless atrocities were done under his reign over the Catholic church in France and is one of the reasons why France is so dissociated from God today: they threw the proverbial baby out with the bath water, so to speak.
Ouf! That feels like a low key to begin on… let’s go back a step or two…

Gonna keep things short & sweet this morning, but I wanted to share a pretty neat moment from our week. Believers who’d come face to face with the horrors of ISIS and lived to tell the story…

If you didn’t see my last post you may not have been aware that Dominic qualified, in the quarter final quizzing tournament (that took place via ZOOM), to go on to the national finals. So… last weekend, we changed things up and left Châtellerault for a couple of days. It was really, really nice. As we were driving up to Melun (greater Paris region) it occurred to me that it had been a full 6 months since I’d driven that route.
How’d the day go?
Pretty good you might say, but before I give you the full details, let me talk about the day before…

Officially, school only just ended a couple of weeks ago (July 10th-ish). Practically speaking though… they were done weeks earlier, but with the uncertainty of COVID-19 hanging over their heads in terms of whether they’d have to return, what other work they’d have to submit, etc.
The balance of July was really a true break.
Unlike the past three years when there were trips to North America planned, this was our first “stay-at-home” July since then. It kind of felt good actually.
Now… we’re beginning to switch ever so slowly back into “thinking about school” mode. However, we’ll save that… let’s look at the week.
