#3GoodThings – #7

(Written Jan. 25, 2019)

It’s been a while since I’ve felt this wrung out and to be truthful, it would be the easiest thing in the world to “Go directly to bed… do not pass go, do not stop for #3GoodThings.”

(Monopoly players will get the reference)

But part of building a habit is being consistent so before I call it a day… here are today’s…

Today’s #3GoodThings

  1. Today I taught about 100 students in 4 classes for a total 7 hours of teaching time… straight through. I taught 70 of them last semester so I know them already. I know the ones for whom English comes easy and which ones really struggle. Today we did an Improv exercise (English for performing arts students after all) and one of the students who has most struggled, all last semester, and who generally appears the least connected – due to the strugglewas unstoppable. He kept coming up with things to add and had a huge smile the whole time – first time I saw this with that student. If you’re a teacher… you will understand that this is a GoodThing!
  2. Before leaving the campus, I had to work out some scheduling details with one of the secretaries. When I arrived at her office, I met two of the key people who coordinate the master-level class I’m teaching. This is no small thing. I have several colleagues who, in 2 years, I’ve never met in person – I’ve only seen their names on emails. One of the two people, I’d just gotten some much needed direction from last night (Jan. 24th), so to meet her on campus the very next day… was wonderful!
  3. Finally, after supper (and a 45-min nap – I won’t hide or deny it), Liz & the kids and I all crammed onto the couch and watched “Help! I Shrunk my Teacher” (Au Secours! J’ai rétréci ma prof – a German movie over-dubbed into French). With Sophie & Dominic getting older, homework, friends, etc. Our Friday-night movie nights have gotten fewer and farther in between so it had been a while. There’s increasingly less room on the couch, as the kids grow, but it feels good to all cram in together. This was a GoodThing and the last one I’ll mention for today.

Now, I’ve just passed go, just collected by $200 and am headed straight to bed… g’night! 🙂
