This week we got to look at a big empty place.
You know the one. In fact, you’ve probably looked at that same space in the last several weeks… just like us. Curious?
Someone recently asked me what the goal or purpose was of short-term missions in general.
If you were to check the website of a dozen sending organizations, you’d likely see a variety of uniquely worded statements, but the goal of STM is essentially three-fold. Organizations will focus on one or more of these three aspects, to various extents or in various combinations.
- STM assists missions’ staff and overseas churches to spread the Gospel.
- STM provides participants with excellent training & personal growth opportunities.
- STM constitutes a recruitment funnel for sending organizations.
I was recently asked about how I brought up the subject of STM involvement with my pastor. It was a good question, here’s how it happened for us.
This week we’ve begun getting ready for fall. A final trim for the hedge, cleaning up the garden beds, harvesting the last of the tomatoes and tackling one of the two full-sized apple trees (I’m still sore from that one – Tree #2 will have to wait). I’ve noticed, though, that every day gives us opportunity to learn from and about the Lord… even in the midst of ugliness.
The sun rises over the Vienne River in Châtellerault.
Today you woke up.
(Perhaps some of you are still in the process of waking up)
Maybe you found yourself mulling over yesterdays worries or last weeks failures; often times those things stay with us a while and oddly enough they are most present in our minds when we are trying to fall asleep or when we awake… potentially coloring our mood for the day.
I wish I could say that we were spending Liz’s birthday in Paris, but alas no… we’re far from being well dressed and enjoying a dinner cruise on the Seine as we were when this photo was taken a few years ago. I’m in dirty, smelly clothes & surrounded by some 30 animals while she is in town with the kids… at least for this morning.
I was recently asked a question and thought that the answer might benefit others who find themselves confident that God is calling them to short-term missions involvement, but they’re perhaps not yet quite sure where.
I’m applying for short-term missions. Do I indicate the country that I’m feeling or is there only a list of certain countries that the organization is recruiting for?
As I sit here to write you this morning, I have a hot chocolate sitting beside me (mornings are getting cooler), Sophie has just returned from walking Pollux, the boys are still “cocooning” (after a week of a 6:30 “rise-&-shine time”), Liz is doing the same and the chickens are emerging from their coop to spend the day roaming about the yard.
