On the Road again… Bible School

On the Road again… Bible School

OK, let’s be clear… today’s feature image is not a picture of me on the road again (I’m for sure not zipping around France in a vintage, red convertible) but it is something I saw while on my way.

Stretches like this, national roads lined with Plane Trees or Sycamores, are a pretty common sight and a welcome break from the frantic pace of the highways, which are extra busy with vacation travel. I came through this stretch yesterday, on my way home from Bible School which took up the bulk of my week, but first let me tell you about an unexpected treat.

Follow the Cross!

cross, old iron cross, Bible Verse, AIMLong.ca, AIMLong

An old, iron, road-side cross in the countryside.

There was a time when cross-roads were commonly marked with a cross or, in some villages, a crucifix. At many an intersection, between field and hamlet, those crosses have stood the test of time and can still be found today.

Their placement has always struck me:
At a cross-road… a place of decision.

If there was ever a place where we needed to consider the cross, surely it is those times when we find ourselves at a cross-road, an intersection, a place of decision. Like those roadside crosses, considering the cross will help guide our choices.

When we don’t know what to do in a given situation, the Word of God gives us a hint:
Take whatever course of action will lift up Jesus and give him a place of preeminence.

He will use that moment, that decision to draw the hungry heart to himself; whether the hungry heart is your own or someone else’s.

Follow the cross!

God Provides

God Provides

Grapes. Lots & lots of grapes.

I’ve always loved the symbolism and from the time I had my own home, had a grapevine planted somewhere in the garden. “Symbolism?”, you may ask, “What symbolism?”

In the Old Testament book of Numbers (13:23-25) the Israelites sent to spy out the promised land discovered a place of plenty. In particular, they found a grapevine that was producing so well that they clipped a bunch of grapes to take back to the rest of their countrymen as proof. That bunch of grapes was so big that it took two men to carry it on a stick. It was proof that God had provided a good place for them to enter, a place of provision… truly a promised land!

Great will be their Peace

images of France, Pictures of France, Bible Verse, AIMLong.ca, AIMLong, chatellerault, la ligne verte

Our kids out for an autumn bike ride around Châtellerault.

The whole of Isaiah 54 speaks of a hopeful promise… a time when the pain of the past would be left behind and the future would be brighter. In fact, it is in this same chapter, that we hear the very familiar quotation:

“No weapon formed against thee shall prosper” (v.17)

If you feel as though you are, or have been, weighed down by a very heavy past, I encourage you to go read Isaiah 54. All of the promises made in there are said to be the heritage of the servants of the Lord.

I want very much for my children to experience great peace, but that will not happen all by itself… the same verse states the prerequisite:

“Thy children shall be taught of the Lord”

Teach your children something of the Lord today…
you will build in them a recipe for peaceful living down the road.
